Free SEO tools / Redirect Checker

Redirect checker: trace the redirect chain of any URL

Enter a URL and this tool follows its redirects one hop at a time, up to 10, and shows the status code of every hop, the final URL and whether the chain loops. It tells permanent redirects (301, 308) from temporary ones (302, 307), checks that http:// reaches https://, and shows how www and non-www end up.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between 301, 302, 307 and 308?

301 and 308 are permanent redirects; 302 and 307 are temporary. 307 and 308 also require the client to repeat the request with the same method, while 301 and 302 let some clients change POST to GET.

How many redirects are too many?

Google's documentation says its crawlers follow up to 10 redirect hops by default. Every extra hop is another round trip for visitors, so the target is one hop from any old URL to its final URL.

Should http:// redirect with a 301?

Yes, when the move to https is permanent: one 301 (or 308) straight to the https:// version of the same path. The checker flags a first hop that is temporary or that stays on http.

Does this follow JavaScript or meta refresh redirects?

No. Only HTTP 3xx responses are followed. If the final page has a meta refresh tag, the tool reports it, but it does not follow it.

Why did the tool refuse to follow a redirect?

Redirects to non-public addresses, non-http schemes or non-standard ports are never followed, as a safety rule for a public tool. Point the redirect at your public page.
