Free SEO tools / Sitemap Checker

XML sitemap checker and validator

Enter a domain. The tool finds your sitemap from the Sitemap lines in robots.txt (or /sitemap.xml), reads sitemap index files (up to 5 child sitemaps), counts the URLs, checks the lastmod dates, duplicates, http:// and off-site URLs, and requests a sample of 15 URLs to catch 404s, redirects and noindex pages that should not be listed.

Frequently asked questions

What are the limits of a sitemap file?

Per Google's documentation, a single sitemap can hold 50,000 URLs and be 50 MB uncompressed. Larger sites split into several sitemaps listed in a sitemap index.

Should every URL have a lastmod?

It is optional. If you include it, it should be the date the page content last changed. The checker warns when it is missing for many URLs, malformed, or identical on every URL, because then it says nothing about which pages changed.

Why must a sitemap only list 200, indexable URLs?

A sitemap is a list of the URLs you want crawled and indexed. Redirecting, erroring and noindex URLs in it waste crawl attention and signal that the list is not maintained.

Can a sitemap list URLs from another domain?

Not by default: a sitemap can list URLs of the site that hosts it. The checker flags URLs on other hosts.

Does a sitemap guarantee indexing?

No. It helps crawlers discover URLs; whether they are indexed is decided separately.
